St. Martin in the Fields Octet Returns to NE Ohio

Tue 10/18 @ 7:30PM

The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble has been performing its unusual brand of chamber music — works for larger groups ranging from quintets to octets rather than the familiar quartet — since 1967, although its chamber orchestra, from which the chamber ensemble is drawn, predated it by more than a decade, establishing its reputation for musical excellence.

Today it’s led by internationally celebrated violinist Joshua Bell as its music director, the first person to hold that title since it was held by orchestra co-founder Sir Neville Marriner. He’s only added to the ensemble’s luster.

The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble is a frequent visitor to this area, generally hosted by Tuesday Musical Association in Akron or the Cleveland Chamber Music Society. It’s the latter organization that’s bringing them to town this time to perform at the Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights. The program there includes Henry Purcell’s Chacony in G minor for Strings , arranged by Benjamin Britten; Johannes Brahms Sextet for Strings in B flat major; and Romanian composer George Enescu’s Octet for Strings in C major.
