In 2017, activist Basheer Jones was elected to city council from Cleveland’s Ward 7, which covers some diverse racial and socio-economic territory. He represents the historic black neighborhood of Hough, with its mix of gentrifications and poverty, AsiaTown, Midtown and St. Clair-Superior. He’s also the first Muslim to serve on Cleveland City Council.
Among other things, he created the Imani Food Distribution Center in his ward, pushed for Cleveland to declare an Indigenous People’s Day, fought for much-needed reforms at the Cuyahoga County jail, and recently, co-sponsored the resolution declaring that racism is a public health crisis.
Jones will join the City Club of Cleveland for a conversation about his work and the impact of racism in Cleveland. Register for the online forum here.
