Free Virtual Panel Talks About Incorporating Bias-Free Policing in Cleveland

Wed 7/14 @ 6-7:30PM

Just as Dennis Kucinich stunned many Clevelanders with a racist dog whistle of a mailer for his new mayoral campaign, describing Cleveland as a violent hellhole that needs to be flooded with more cops, cooler heads and more rational minds will be participating in the latest monthly conversation about the Cleveland Consent Decree, hosted by the NAACP and United Way of Greater Cleveland.

The consent decree was entered into in 2015 by the city of Cleveland and the Obama Justice Department, based on the awareness that policing in Cleveland is broken and needs reform, not “more.” It was pushed aside during the Trump years but is once again being activated to make badly needed changes. Maybe.  Recently, one of its members, CWRU assistant professor of law Ayesha Bell Hardaway was told to resign after making comments about the Derek Chauvin verdict, illustrating exactly why we needed a consent decree in the first place.

“Bias-Free Policing and Racial Profiling” is the topic of the next discussion. The consent decree included the requirement that the Cleveland police incorporated bias-free policing into its “management, policies and procedures, job descriptions, recruitment, training, personnel evaluations, resource deployment, and accountability.” How’s it going? Presumable the discussion will address that.

This is a free, virtual event. You can register to attend here.
