In late August, University Circle’s Uptown area kicked off a weekly series of music events called Uptown Saturday Nights, with local American roots music artists playing in various restaurants and bars in the area for free.

At the same time, they announced that the weekly events would culminate with the two-day RootsFest. That event features not only evening performances in the clubs, but daytime concerts on an outdoor stage on Toby’s Plaza outside MOCACleveland and a children’s activities tent sponsored by the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Children’s Museum of Cleveland that includes live music performances by groups such as old-time/jazz/early pop band the Spyder Stompers and Sugar Pie (pictured).

It also includes documentary film screenings at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, just a short stroll from MOCA, with films about the lives of bluesmen Mance Lipscomb and Lightnin Hopkins.

The music you can choose from includes blues, country, bluegrass, folk, soul and reggae artists. Find a full schedule here. It’s all free.
