Positive signs of change will be onstage at Severance Music Center this weekend when the Cleveland Orchestra performs. Finnish conductor 54-year-old Susanna Mälkki, a respected conductor who has appeared in opera houses and symphony halls around the world, will be on the podium — something once nearly unthinkable just a few decades ago when orchestras were always led by men.
And joining the orchestra for the Piano Concerto by Schumann — not Robert but his wife Clara, herself an outstanding pianist — is 27-year-old British pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason, whose debut album 2019 debut album was Romance: The Piano Music of Clara Schumann. She’s one of seven siblings — all gifted classical musicians, and among the handful of Black musicians in the field.
The program also features Paul Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler Symphony, inspired by the German Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald, and, on the evening concerts, J.S. Bach’s Ricercare from Musical Offering, orchestrated by Anton Webern
