Geneva-on-the-Lake Welcomes Summer with its Annual Season Kickoff Parade

Sat 5/13 @ 1PM

It’s really hard to believe but summer is almost here! Things are starting to grow, and almost daily we’re getting a new schedule for an outdoor concert series.

One of the sure signs summer is almost here is the summer kickoff weekend at the resort town of Geneva-on-the-Lake in Ashtabula County. In the winter it’s home to less than 1,000 people. In the summer, its main street, Lake Road, aka the Strip, is mobbed with a mixture of families looking to pick up a treat at Madsen’s Donuts or the Pucker Up Candy Shoppe where salt water taffy, cotton candy and plastic toys lure in kids of all ages, and the bikers who have made GOTL their headquarters for decades. (Beware: many of the shops selling biker gear still haven’t gotten rid of the confederate flag patches).

It’s a junk-food paradise with plenty of daytime fun for kids (putt putt, ziplining) and countless bars for adult nighttime dancing and whooping it up. And it’s convenient to the wineries in the Grand River Valley where you can enjoy a more laidback evening drinking the local grapes.

This weekend you’ll find many of the businesses opening, although a few don’t open until Memorial Day. The summer kickoff parade steps out at 1pm; bring a lawn chair and come early to grab some guilty-pleasure food and to get a good spot.
