It’s become a tradition in recent years for jazz trumpeter, whose flourishing music career has taken him far afield from his Cleveland hometown — from Japan to Abu Dhabi to the Kennedy Center in D.C. and Lincoln Center in New York — to head back home for annual New Year’s Eve performances at Nighttown, something he’s done for the past 18 years. There, family and friends who remember him from his ways as part of the Tri-C High School All Stars program where he was spotted by Wynton Marsalis and commended for the first jazz studies class at Juilliard can catch up with how he’s doing musically. (He posted that lack of performing this year left him a little rusty so he’s been oiling his chops with rehearsal videos posted online).
This year, for his 19th,he’ll be doing things differently. Nighttown is on hiatus until sometime next year. But you can still hear him and his friends perform — you’ll just have to prepare the meal and pour the champagne yourself. Farinacci will be joined by fellow Clevelanders, vocalist Evelyn Wright, pianist Joe Hunter, bassist Peter Dominguez, drummer Jim Rupp and alto sax player Thomas Shinabeck, for a live-streamed program Resolutions, A Swingin’ New Year’s Eve Concert. It will feature Great American Songbook favorites by composers such as Cole Porter, George & Ira Gershwin, and Irving Berlin.
“Rather than looking backward with the typical year-end review, I wanted to find a way to acknowledge this precarious moment in our lives and create a musical experience that looks forward,” says Farinacci. “I am proud to be live-streaming this fun and interactive New Year’s Eve concert from my hometown favorite jazz club, Nighttown.”
Different types of streaming passes can be purchased at SongbookWatchParty.com. It’s not a Zoom event; it can be viewed on your television as well as mobile phone tablet or computer.
