Jazz/Pop Vocalist Helen Welch Brings Her Carpenters Christmas Show Back to Akron

Sun 12/18 @ 4PM

Actress/vocalist Helen Welch is British by birth and upbringing, but she settled in Cleveland some two decades ago. She established a flourishing career in her native country, and she brought it with her to northeast Ohio where she’s performed with the likes of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, the Blossom Music Festival and the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. She’s put in her own shows where she’s interpreted music originally sung by Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and the Carpenters.

She’s also become known for her holiday shows, such as Jingle Bell Swing and her Carpenters Christmas show, the latter of which she’ll be doing this week at Akron’s E. J. Thomas Hall. She’s quite a Carpenters fan; her catalog includes an album called Superstar: The Carpenters Reimagined.

The Akron show will feature holiday tunes as well as non-holiday hits recorded by the brother/sister duo of Richard and Karen Carpenter, songs like “Merry Christmas Darling,” “The Christmas Song,” “We’ve Only Just Begun,” and “Top of the World.”
