Gypsy jazz, a style that emerged from Paris in the 1930s, has been enjoying a resurgence in recent years. That’s probably because it’s a lively, irresistible type of music that seems to brim with the energy of nights spent dancing and socializing.
New England’s Occidental Gypsy takes gypsy jazz, adds other flavors of jazz and throws in some world music for good measure. They’re known for taking contemporary tunes like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and doing them gypsy-jazz style. And Eli Bishop, who plays the genre’s trademark violin, actually had a background d in country fiddling.
The band’s rounded out by lead guitarist/composer Brett Feldman, the rhythm section of percussionist Jon Chapman and bassist Jeff Feldman and the smooth, retro vocals of Jeremy Frantz who also plays jazz guitar. The group will be performing at the Bop Stop. Tickets are $20.
