Rock Hall Program Looks at Life & Legacy of Legendary Singer/Songwriter John Prine

Thu 12/7 @ 7PM

The late John Prine was one of the greats of American singer-songwriter folk music, with an incalculable influence on the generations of rootsy acoustic artists that followed him. Humor, sentimentality, history and social commentary mingled easily in his vast repertoire of songs, which included such classic tunes as “Angel from Montgomery and “Hello in There.”

He emerged from Chicago’s vibrant ’60s folk scene that grew out of the Old Town School of Folk Music and also produced Steve Goodman, Bonnie Koloc and Jim Post, but his music traveled far beyond Chicago after the release of his 1971 debut album. His tunes were covered by countless artists and praised by Bob Dylan. He was a lifetime Grammy winner including a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tragically, he was one of the earlier casualties of the COVID pandemic, passing away in 2020 at the age of 73. Now the Rock Hall is giving music fans the opportunity to learn more about his music and his legacy in a discussion of a new book, Prine on Prine: Interviews and Encounters, by Nashville-based journalist Holly Gleason. The panel discussion will include Gleason, Prine’s widow and manager Fiona Whelan Prine, and country singer/songwriter Lyle Lovett and cover both his life and his music. There will also be an exhibit of Prine artifacts on display.
