Underground Cleveland venue Speak in Tongues became a legend after its early 2000s closing. Running throughout most of the 90s, it was located in a decrepit old house on Lorain Road on the edge of Ohio City — long before that area began to gentrify.
The club’s informal and erratic “community-run” booking policies featured lots of local talent mixed with touring bands, some permanently obscure, some of whom became big names: Modest Mouse, Alkaline Trio, Jimmy Eat World. The venue also featured a revolving cast of temporary residents who would crash in corners or on filthy couches. Residents included cats who lent their distinctive scent to the place.
Eventually evicted by the landlord, the place has lived on in photos taken by regulars such as Ken Blaze and in the memories of those who hung out there. Former Scene writer Eric Sandy has now collected those memories in a new book titled Speak in Tongues: An Oral History of Cleveland’s Infamous DIY Punk Venue. The book is available on Tuesday June 14.
