The Stephen Petronio Company was founded in 1984 by choreographer Petronio to present his postmodern-style dance works. The ensemble has performed in more than three dozens countries, done 25 season’s a New York City’s Joyce Theater and even held a Dancing Lab residency at the National Center for Choreography at the University of Akron.
But they’ve never performed in Cleveland — until now. They’ll be making their debut, originally scheduled for March 2002, at Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio Theatre under the auspices of DANCECleveland.
They’ll perform a program that sounds like it would be intriguing to fans of pop culture, whether they’re into contemporary dance or not. Among other pieces, it will include American Landscapes, featuring the music of filmmaker and Cuyahoga Falls native Jim Jarmusch and Jozef Van Wissem with imagery by artist Robert Longo; Creep, featuring the music of Radiohead; and New New Prayer for Now, for which composer/performance artist Monstah Black created a score based on tunes such as the Afircan-American spiritual “There Is a Balm in Gilead” and Paul Simon’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
