Swedish trio ABBA are one of those somewhat cheesy, totally commercial acts who somehow became super-hip. But there’s no denying that their cheesy pop tunes, such as “Dancing Queen,” “SOS,” “Does Your Mother Know” and “Waterloo” were irresistibly catchy earworms. From 1974-1980 their music was ubiquitous, despite the rise of punk and new wave. And their appeal goes on and on, as the success of the jukebox musical Mamma Mia shows.
Now the North Coast Men’s Chorus tackles their music in its next concert ABBApalooza, with two shows at Playhouse Squares Mimi Ohio Theatre. It’s perfect music for this ensemble, which knows how to deftly walk the line between reverence and absurdity. More than six voices will before performing nearly two dozen ABBA songs, including “Waterloo,” “Fernando,” “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight),”
“Take a Chance on Me,” and — sure to be a showstopper —“Dancing Queen.” I expect to see actual dancing and extravagant costumes on this one, guys! Anyone who has been to their concerts knows that NCMC isn’t just about standing there singing — it’s about skits, dancing, costumes, props, comedy and more — full-in entertainment.
