Thu 4/1
We’ve had some nice, warm days, and all you newbie gardens who started pandemic gardens may be impatient to get stuff in the ground again this year. But don’t put those tomatoes and peppers out yet — it’s way too early.
One thing you CAN get started on now is herbs, which if you haven’t tried, you should. They’re easy to grow, low maintenance for the most part, and add a healthy, flavorful zing to all sorts of dishes. And, with the exception of basil, they’ll all do fine outdoors this time of year; they don’t mind cool, just hard frost.
Northeast Ohio gardeners can find the largest selection of organic herbs in the region at Huron’s Mulberry Creek Herb Farm, which conveniently opens for business this week. There is their huge retail greenhouse you’ll find dozens of types of thymes, multiple rosemaries, lots of lavenders, oregano, mint chives, parsley, sage and herbs you’ve never heard of to try if you’re the adventurous type. They also have an enormous selection of Pelargoniums (popularly known as scented geraniums, which give off the aromas of rose, lemon, lime, nutmeg and more; tiny “fairy” plants and accessories to create a fairy garden; aloes; dwarf citrus trees; vegetable starters; and much more.
In addition, their beautiful grounds are available for strolling — they encourage you to bring a picnic and enjoy it in the pavilion — and they create their own fairy rooms under trees and bushes for the kids to discover. They’re open Tuesday-Saturday @ 10am-5pm April through July, and Sundays in May.
