In 2020, Governor DeWine signed a bill, which designated the February 18th birthday of Lorain-born author Toni Morrison, who died in 2019 at the age of 88, as Toni Morrison Day in Ohio. It recognized legacy of the author of such acclaimed works as The Bluest Eye, Beloved, Sula and Tar Baby, powerful depictions of the challenges facing Black women. She was widely celebrated in her lifetime, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. Her explorations of the racism, sexism and violence Black People have encountered throughout American history have made her a target of cultural censors
It’s become a (new) tradition for Literary Cleveland and ThirdSpace Action Lab to celebrate Toni Morrison Day with a reading of her work. It will kick off with tributes to Morrison by featured readers. Then the mic will be opened to anyone who wants to share a favorite passage from her work, their reflections about her, or an original work influenced by her writing.
The event, which takes place at ThirdSpace Action Lab in Glanville, is free and open to all, but reservations are requested. Register to attend here.
