Dobama’s “At the Wake of a Dead Drag Queen” Celebrates Being Black, Gay and Southern

Fri 1/26-Sun 2/18

There’s been a lot of conversation about drag queens in Ohio lately, much of it (such as in the Ohio legislature) coming from a place of ignorance. That won’t be the case when Dobama Theatre stages Terry Guest’s 2019 one-act play At the Wake of a Dead Drag Queen.

The two-person play, that’s both funny and serious, focuses on two drag queens who grew up poor and gay in the south. One is Black and has died of AIDS; the other is HIV-positive. The former returns from the dead to celebrate his own life — his struggles and triumphs. The dead drag queen Courtney/Anthony is performed by Baldwin Wallace music theatre alum Jason Zeno who has amassed both local and national performance credits; Dan Hendrock, an alum of KSU and CSU/CWRU MFA program and artistic director of Chagrin Falls’ Academy for the Performing Arts is Vickie/Hunter.

Opening night includes free glass of champagne. The show runs through February 18. Get tickets here.
