Similar to the Larchmere Porchfest, the Highland Square PorchRokr, in Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood, features musicians performing at about two dozen locations scattered around the neighborhood.
But it’s much bigger, with nearly 130 bands and musicians playing, ranging from dance cover bands to experimental jazz. to country, Irish music and punk. And unlike the Larchmere event, it also hosts a linked art festival, so visitors can enjoy both local music and local visual art for free.
It kicks off at 10:30am with the PorchRokr Guitar Orchestra, comprising volunteer guitarists of all skill levels, paying tribute to David Bowie and Prince and wraps up with a headlining set at 6 by garage rockers the Dreemers.
There are also vendors selling locally made wares, including clothes, candles and jewelry, and food from Akron-based businesses. There are all sorts of other things going on as well, including kids’ activities and a silent disco, so make a full day of it.
