AAWR Hosts Conversation About Black Abstract Artists

Wed 11/15 @ 7PM

The show Tangents: Abstract & Geometric Art in Northeast Ohio is currently on view at Artists Archives of the Western Reserve.

Among others it includes work by Black painter Mark Howard. Yet Black artists in America who work in abstract styles have often dismissed or marginalized, given the expectation in some quarters that they should be using their art to say something about their racial social or cultural experience. Some arts “experts” looked askance at artists like Sam Gilliam or Alma Thomas, not finding ‘blackness” in their work.

AAWR is hosting a virtual conversation between noted African-American art collector Kerry Davis, and Cleveland Institute of Art Associate Professor David C. Hart. It will be accompanied by images from the Kerry & C. Betty Davis Collection.

The talk is free and open to all, and there will be a Q&A afterwards. Go here to register.
