Jazz trumpeter/composer Sean Jones, now 46, has come a long way since he grew up in Warren, Ohio, where he got a background in gospel, jazz and classical music. He went first to Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music and then got his master’s degree at Rutgers, did a stint in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and taught at a number of prestigious universities including Oberlin Conservatory. He’s released eight albums as a band leader and was featured on vocalist Nancy Wilson’s granny-winning 2007 album Turned to Blue. And he served as artistic director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra from 2010-2015 where he forged relationships with some of the top jazz players in northeast Ohio. He’s returned to the are many times.
He’s now back with the old gang to be featured in the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra’s kickoff concert of their 2024-25 season, their 40th. They’ve even dubbed it “The Sean Is You” in his honor. Something else special will be happening that night as well. Another CJO trumpet player, composer and artistic director emeritus (1999-2009), Jack Schantz, will be honored with induction into the CJO Preservation Circle.
It takes place at the Maltz Performing Ats Center. Go here for tickets.
