The Happy Dog’s series, Happy Dog Takes on the World, in conjunction with the City Club, is a (usually) monthly discussion of some major (usually) foreign policy issue we should be paying more attention to.

This month, the Happy Dog Takes on the State of European Democracy, as recent elections in European countries have given mixed signals on whether support for democracy is strong or whether countries are sliding toward Putin-favoring authoritarianism, the way the American Republican Party is. Hungary has moved to the far right, with Putin ally Viktor Orban recently winning his fourth term. But in France, president Emmanuel Macon easily fended off a challenge from the far-right Putin ally Marine Le Pen, although drama-stirring media loves to point out that the margin, although large, was less than in previous elections. And all of this is happening in the context of Putin’s destructive invasion of Ukraine, targeting civilians.

Panelists at the Happy Dog will hash over the signals behind all this. They include political strategist Jerry Austin, Case Western Reserve University political science professor Elliot Posner and moderator Milena Sterio.

It’s free and open to the public, and with also be livestreamed at the City Club’s website. Questions can be tweeted to @TheCityClub or texted to 330.541.5794.
