Author/journalist Rebecca A. Fannin hails from Fairfield County, located southeast of Columbus on the edge of its metro area and Applachia. She was an Ohio University grad who worked as a journalist in Dayton before hitting the big time, covering business, technology and entrepreneurship, with a special interest in China, for multiple media outlets and writing three books about China and its economy.
Her new book, Silicon Heartland: Transforming the Midwest from Rust Belt to Tech Belt, returns her focus to the region where she grew up, looking at how technology is allegedly bringing new life to midsized Rust Belt cities and Appalachian towns. The promotion for the book says, “Remote regions that were nearly forgotten when the money and power shifted to Silicon Valley—and to China—are being rebooted and reenergized like never before. This movement of tech startups burgeoning in Middle America bodes well not only for leading the region to greater heights, but also for boosting our economy and morale nationwide.”
True — or not? Ohio has been a hub of job loss since John Kasich took over as governor in 2011 and, despite Governor DeWine’s upbeat press conferences announcing new job creation, the state is in danger of going backwards in part due to its regressive social policies and the death of democratic governance. Listen to her talk and see if she can persuade you differently, when she does a livestreamed event through the Hudson Library and Historical Society.
