Maltz Museum Offers Live & Virtual MLK Day Programming

Jim Crow Museum

Mon 1/18 @ 10AM-5PM

The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage has been closed since the pandemic surged in the fall. But it reopens on Monday January 18 for its annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“Hear Our Voices: Annual MLK Day Celebration” will offer the chance to tour the museum’s permanent collections live from 10am-5pm, with limited time tickets. But it will also have virtual family activities and an online program with Dr. David Pilgrim, founder and curator of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University in Michigan.

From 11am-noon there’ll be a Stop the Hate essay-writing workshop online for 6th-12th graders interested in entering the annual contest, where they’ll get tips on crafting an impactful piece based on their personal experience.

March Toward Freedom Family programming happens @ 1-2pm, with Punch McHamm from BravoNation reading from the book As Good as Anybody about the friendship of Dr. King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. There’ll also be an interactive Q&A with Zelma Brown of SAFY and improv theater activities hosted by Talespinner Children’s Theatre.

Then, from 3-5:30, Dr. Pilgrim will talk about his work with the Jim Crow Museum in Big Rapids, Michigan where he has collected and displays relics of the Jim Crow era in order to drive conversations about racism, segregation and social justice. Participants can take a free virtual tour of the museum prior to the lecture.

All activities are free; pre-registration is required for online programs. Go to maltzmuseum.org.
