Film and Concert Pay Tribute to R&B Legend Ruth Brown at Tri-C Metro

Thu 11/16 @ 7PM

Fri 11/17 @ 10AM

Vocalist/songwriter Ruth Brown, whose career reached its pinnacle in the 1950s, was known for her pop-influenced R&B sound which by the mid-late 50s, saw some of her R&B hits crossing over to the pop chart. The best known are “(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean,” “This Little Girl’s Gone Rockin’,” and “Lucky Lips.” By the 60s, she had stepped back from her music career, only to return in the 70s as and comic actress. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Tri-C Performing Arts is presenting a tribute to Brown that features both a film and live performance. It kicks off with a screening of the hour-long 1988 TV documentary That Rhythm, Those Blues, directed by George T. Nierenberg, which features interviews with Brown as well as other R&B greats.

That will be followed by a live performance of material from the 1968 album A Fine Brown Frame — the 1968 recording featuring Brown with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra — with vocalist Shenel Johns trumpet player Dominick Farinacci, pianist Jonathan Thomas and the East Central Jazz Educators Big Band, directed of Steve Enos.

Nierenberg will be at the show and will do a master class on Friday November 17 @10am in the auditorium. It’s open to the public.
