Polls have shown over and over that the vast majority of Ohioans of all politician persuasions favor stricter gun laws such as universal background checks. That includes gun owners.
Sadly, it doesn’t include the majority of Ohio state legislators who, pandering to the NRA, continue to spit in the face of Ohioans and the police departments who have shown up in the statehouse to testify against bills such as the one eliminating training and licensing for concealed carry and expanding “stand your ground” laws. “Gun rights” extremists even successfully challenged a common-sense Columbus ordinance that required people to lock up guns where a child might have access to them. And stronger gun regulation has become a cause célèbre among young activists, driven by an explosion of school shootings.
Gun violence is the topic of the next public forum at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland. The speakers will be Jarod Schlacht, First District Commander of Cleveland Division of Police and Rachel Lovell, director of the Criminology Research Center at Cleveland State University. They’ll talk about the real-life impact of gun proliferation and why the NRA (National Rifle Association), which has evolved from a sportsmen’s group to an extremist rightwing lobbying group for gun sellers and manufacturers, has such outsized influence.
The forum is free and open to all. Go here for more information.
