The Cleveland Pride Band has come a long way since its formation back in the fall of 2003. Known as the Blazing River Freedom Band since 2007, it’s long participated in events such as Pride and other LGBTQ+ focused events, as well as put on several public concerts a year. Early this year, it again changed its name, and has enjoyed a post-pandemic surge of momentum, which includes many new members and playing concerts at Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio Theatre.
That’s where they’ll be this week for their 20th anniversary concert “Legacy,” which will showcase guest artist, flute player George Pope, a faculty member at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and principal flute for the Blossom Festival Orchestra. The program will feature both classics and modern standards, performed by 60 amateur volunteer musicians spanning generations and LGBTQ+ identities, as well as allies.
