Apollo’s Fire Aims to Attract Local and International Fans with Virtual Benefit

Sun 9/13 @ 3PM

All those big fundraising galas hosted by area arts organizations, usually in the spring and fall, are off the calendar this year. But in challenge there is opportunity. And many of our local groups are now moving their signature annual events online, opening them to supporters from around the world.

That’s what Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland’s baroque orchestra, is doing with its “Go for Baroque! — A Worldwide Benefit for Apollo’s Fire.” The chamber orchestra has already acquired many national and international fans from its touring performances in Great Britain, Ireland, Spain, France, Austria and Italy, as well as domestic performances at such prestige venues as the Tanglewood Festival in Massachusetts, Chicago’s Ravinia and Carnegie Hall. Now those fans have the chance to add their support by “attending” the benefit.

It starts at 3pm with a “reception” and the opportunity to browse its silent auction items. That’s following by a concert from 3:30-6pm, hosted by Apollos Fire’s founder and artistic director Jeannette Sorrell. Featured performers include three vocalists named Amanda (sopranos Amanda Forsythe and Amanda Powell and mezzo Amanda Crider), violinist Olivier Brault, British guitarist Steve Player and Ohio-based hammered dulcimer player Tina Bergmann, along with other AF musicians and special guests. Former members of AP’s Musette’s children choir, who now live around the world in cities such as Paris and San Francisco, will also participate. There will be a special appearance by the honorary chair of the event centenarian arts philanthropist Clara Rankin.

“After 5 months of quarantine and isolation, this seemed like the right moment finally to bring the international Apollo’s Fire family together,” said Sorrell in the event press release. “We have 13,000 subscribers on YouTube, many of whom are scattered across North America, Europe and Latin America. And we have a beloved local audience here in Northeast Ohio. People everywhere want Apollo’s Fire — and all the arts — to survive in this challenging time. So we hope that music-lovers around the world will be inspired to come together on September 13 and help us make our fundraising goal.”

Tickets are $50 per household to receive the Zoom link. Go here to buy tickets.
