Atla and Matt DeChamplain were high school sweethearts and they’re still making beautiful music together as jazz artists. Vocalist Atla studied with the legendary Jon Hendricks as well as at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford. She’s worked for Hendricks since then and is working on a book about vocalese, the style of singing he’s prominently associated with.
Like his wife, pianist Matt DeChamplain, originally from Connecticut, got his bachelor’s degree from the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz and his master’s from the University of Toledo. He’s performed a numerous major festivals and now teaches in Hartford, including at the Hartt School.
Together the young couple released their first collaborative album, called Pause, last year. They’re coming to town to perform at the Bop Stop. Admission is $10.
