Maltz Museum Immigrant Series Focuses on Cleveland’s Asian Community

Wed 8/10 @ 7PM

Few understand the lifeline that is immigration better than Jews, who have been chased from so many countries. My own ancestors fled Russia during the progroms of the late 19th century. And with a presidential candidate ramping up hate against immigrants, Latinos, Muslims and yes, Jews, it’s never been more essential to look at what immigrants bring to the table. That’s what the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is doing with its Cleveland Immigrant Communities Today series.

This month, the focus is on its rapidly growing and diversifying Asian community, long since grown beyond the tiny “Chinatown” of 40 years ago. Filmmaker and co-founder of the Cleveland Asian Festival Johnny Wu, first runner-up in the Malz Museum’s Youth speak Out competition Apoorva Vallampati, and Gia Hoa Ryan, who came to the U.S. from Vietnam in 1971 and has helped other refugees and immigrants find their way, are the speakers.  Joe Cimperman of Global Cleveland moderates. Tickets are $6 and should be reserved in advance.

On Wed 9/14, the topic will be the area’s predominantly Puerto Rican Latino community.
