Howl

Sometimes this town makes us scream. In a good way, of course. And this time of year, we really have something to shout about.

When we say ShopLOCAL, we mean it. Since 2006, we’ve been mouthing off about how keep your hard earned scratch at our local purveyors, rather than at the big boxes, the malls and the lifestyle centers. First called the Holiday Buying Guide, then the Holiday Shopping Guide, now it’s simply ShopLOCAL and it’s been totally updated with the latest shops and brand new categories: Biking, Coffee Shops, Handmade, Museums, Bazaars & Pop-Ups, Vintage Shops/Clothing and Health/Sustenance. We think it’s the best local shopping guide in the region, maybe the country; spout off & tell us what you think.

But that’s not all. Jeffrey Bowen urges us to Don’t Just Buy Things: Shop With Heart. We also offer a ShopLOCAL Spotlight featuring profiles of Star Pop’s Troy Schwartz, A Guide To Kulchur’s Lyz Bly & RA Washington, and others. This Week we point you to polka, mathematics, Elvis, free beer, garage rock, handmade stuff, a noise lunch and finger-style guitar. You can even hear James Franco Howl as Allen Ginsberg.

Anastasia has curated a few choice music events during this busy holiday season that are worth your while, Sarah spotlights Go Media’s On The Map project, and Josh profiles 10-year-old art curator Brielle Naji. Mansfield rants about being set up, and Roldo howls about Cle City Council and our daily paper. We’re so proud of our mobile app that we’re giving away t-shirts every week. Give it a try and see if it doesn’t make you scream. –Thomas Mulready

Earlier this year, Brielle Naji had a wonderful idea. She wanted to curate an art show/benefit to raise funds to fight pediatric cancer at her father’s art gallery — Loren Naji Studio Gallery in Ohio City.

In addition, all the artwork was to be produced by local children between the ages of 5-13 years old…

In 1894, there was no bigger story in Paris, the world’s most sophisticated culture. The original “trial of the century” was fueled not only by government mis-information, but by the sensationalist media, all in the name of “national security.” Sound familiar?

Now on display at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is Traitor! Spies, Lies and Justice Denied: The Dreyfus Affair, an intriguing multi-media exhibit that uses video, art, posters and interactive polling to bring the Dreyfus Affair to life.

Listen to Mark Davidson, Manager of School and Family Programs at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage as he points out how this exhibition illuminates issues still relevant today: How does the media affect public opinion? How blind is justice? How far will we go in the name of national security? MaltzMuseum.org

On The Map #3
Spotlighting Local Passion

Cleveland’s greatest asset is its people. Sure our sports teams inevitably suck, our politicians have proven scandalous and our new bridge is lackluster — but none of that changes the fact that we’re home to an emerging core of people staying here, investing here, dreaming big & trying to do good for the community.

Go Media spotlights some of these creative folks in their On the Map video series, with the 3rd installment premiering Fri 12/6

Don’t Just Buy Things
Shop with Heart

As Thanksgiving is increasingly sold as “thanks getting,” and we are urged to get the ritualistic overeating of convenience foods out of the way so we can do more shopping, it is ever more important to support your locally owned businesses, bars and restaurants…
