When we talk hot, what do we really mean? Isn’t it just a state of mind? I just visited South Florida with the temps only in the low 40’s during my morning walk on the beach, not counting wind chill, the same as the high here in Cleveland. This week, choose from our HOT picks of things to do, personally curated by our staff of knowledgeable Clevelanders, not a search engine. Start with a steaming hot Cool Cleveland Carnaval party on 2/21, with a band and live Samba straight from Brazil. You can get VIP or general admission tix now before we sell out. Feel the burn as I talk with chef Jonathon Sawyer while he walks us through his work-in-progress The Greenhouse Tavern. Peter shows us why the Old Arcade still sizzles. Soundbite Laureate Douglas O’Bryon ruminates on the contemporary human condition, inspired by a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Jewelry designers John & Penny Novak soak up the sun in the Bahamas while they work half the year. Otis & The Shoreway Saints drop a new CD and Roldo recalls how Cleveland was held hostage. Mansfield wonders if the punishment fits the crime wave, when the crime is waving at Obama. In this difficult economy, we ask you to consider how you can HELP out your neighbors who might be in need- we’ve provided a few links below. Just remember that “hot” is a state of mind. There’s so many cool things to do in the Cleveland area this week, that we can hardly fit it all in this week’s sizzling issue of CoolCleveland.com. And it’s like this every week… –Thomas Mulready

Scoping Out the Old Arcade

Located between Superior and Euclid Avenues downtown the Old Arcade was built in 1890 and stands both as one of this country’s first indoor shopping malls and first “skyscrapers” in Northeast Ohio. The breathtaking structure, said to be modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, Italy, consists of two nine-story towers connected by a glorious, five-story glass and iron atrium. The Old Arcade was designed by noted Cleveland architects George H. Smith and John Eisenmann, the latter of whom designed Southwest General Hospital and the first of many buildings that would comprise Case Western Reserve University. It was erected by the Detroit Bridge Company.

With a gorgeous, 100-foot skylight ceiling, the atrium is adorned with extensive metalwork, oak and striking masonry facades. The top floor also features a row of intricate gargoyle statues that look down upon the entire Arcade’s center floorplan. The great arched entrance on the Superior Avenue (dubbed “Richardsonian” in style after Henry Hobson Richardson) is original to the structure. The Euclid Avenue frontage, on the other hand, was remodeled in 1939. The level of the Superior entrance is some 12 feet lower than the Euclid entrance; this provides the effect of there being two main floors, which are connected by staircases at either end of the Old Arcade…

The Wink that Just Won’t Go Away

The saga of former Cleveland Firefighters Memorial Pipes and Drums band drum major, John Coleman, took on a life of its own a few weeks ago. Coleman, who was suspended for six months after he broke marching orders by acknowledging President Obama and the First Lady as he passed the reviewing stand during the Inauguration Parade, said that he would do it all over again, as he quit the unit in protest over the suspension. “He waved at me first,” was Coleman’s defense, “how could I not wave back?”

Outrage over the incident has poured in from virtually all points on the globe, and Mike Engle, the band director (who served as the judge, jury and executioner that dished out the punishment) now seems to be running for cover. He said that he was afraid the band will be booed when it makes its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade appearance in March in Cleveland…

New pathways for a CLE comeback is cross-linked from BFD to DefendCleveland.net by Ed Morrison. BFD readers have this to say:

Voinovich promoted a Chief of Police who enabled a drug ring. In the name of fiscal conservatism, he created the most bloated Mayor’s office in the city’s history. He pioneered money-sucking initiatives like Gateway and the Rock Hall. And those were his positive accomplishments…. comment by Mark Schumann

Taken together with Chris Thompson’s submission, there’s plenty of raw material here about both our public- and private-sectors’ leadership crisis. It’s been such a long time since our institutions actually worked well that it’s tempting to assume it’s always been this way. It’s helpful to have some historical context. comment by John Polk

Where does the funding for the Greater Cleveland Partnership come from? comment by Justin Balck

As a self-employed individual, each year I must decide whether I want C.O.S.E.’s outrageously overpriced health insurance or the even more overpriced insurance available to individuals on the “open market.” That’s not much of a choice at all, but it’s the only value C.O.S.E. represents to the vast majority of its members and that’s pretty pathetic. comment by Carla Rautenberg

Screw the powerful lobbies. We need to roll right over their bloody carcasses, and the current financial environment offers the best chance of doing that. It’s time for consumers to get enraged about what these clowns have done to the American health care system, if you can even call it that. comment by John Ettorre

Laid (Lei-d?) Back Jewelry Designers
John and Penny Novak mix business with pleasure in The Bahamas

Imagine yourself on a tropical island, where transparent blue-green waters lap against smooth white beaches. After a languorous cup of coffee on your deck, you mosey down to the beach to soak up the sun and collect sea glass. One day, inspired by the brilliant baubles that you’ve poured into jars and bottles, you decide to make a few pieces of jewelry, and you realize you have just found yourself a new business — even though you’re retired.

This is no fantasy. This is life six months out of the year for John (pictured) and Penny Novak, Cleveland-area residents who a few years ago decided to make their vacation spot on Long Island, The Bahamas, their winter home. Experienced entrepreneurs, they have solved the age-old question of how to mix business with pleasure…

No Safe Place
Otis & the Shoreway Saints

Call ’em a Southside Johnny-like bar band with Springsteen-like flourishes if you like, but don’t ever call them late for the punchline. The full and buoyant sound that longtime tavern trackers Otis & the Shoreway Saints deliver is upbeat, fun and celebratory. They’ve got a love jones for that Jersey Shore sound, but their subject matter is pure Cuyahoga County, to quote a tune late in the game on No Safe Place. Over the last decade, Craig “Otis” Jeffrey (vocals, guitars), Mark Roman (keyboards, trumpet, vocals), Greg Breedlove (bass), Justin Noszek (guitars), J. Russell (drums) and Norm Tischler (tenor sax) have definitely made bargoers happy. No Safe Place gives listeners a 12-track thrill ride with beermat allegories like “Working Class Joe’s,” “Treadin’ Beer” and “Life’s Blood.” They’re a rollicking good time; they’re kindly with the draught house wisdom, thrill ride grooves and true blue, blue-collar grit. It’s not high concept, or even highbrow. Not meant to be. Just good ol’ fashioned rockn’roll music. You know what you’re in for when the CD resembling a matchbook is in hand. It’s hot stuff. If Springsteen at the Super Bowl fired you up, you need this.

Otis and the Shoreway Saints play the Brothers Lounge this Friday, February 6 at 7:30PM. Joe’s Garage Band opens. Visit Brothers online at http://www.brotherslounge.com. Visit Otis & Co. at http://www.otisandtheshorewaysaints.com

How Cleveland Was Held Hostage By CEI

This area’s private electric company had a stranglehold on the city’s public electric system. Muny Light, as the city’s system was known, in the 1970s was an island serving some Cleveland neighborhoods, surrounded by CEI, which served in Cleveland and its suburbs.

CEI refused to allow electric power to cross its lines — a common practice called wheeling — to serve the city’s much smaller system. It was tightening its grip. It was hoping its hold would become a death grip.

Without access to cheaper power sources the city was forced to buy from CEI. The company charged higher rates and limited its access. This led to brownouts and shutdowns of service by the city system. The result was damaging to Muny Light, now called Cleveland Public Power…

Flash Forward @ SPACES Gallery 1/30 This exhibition showcases contemporary artists who have gone to college and continue to create right here in Northeast Ohio. Feed your creative mind by partaking of our own locally grown visual produce. In this constellation of local and newly ignited art stars, some work shines brighter than others. Kelly Urquhart & Jaime Kennedy create some meticulously rendered and digitally-collaged images of birds superimposed onto man-made instructions. For instance, one work combines the natural act of drawing something from the natural world-a bird-with man’s attempt at copying nature-instructions to assemble a kite. Also, their whimsical and oddly-eerie images of houses for birds, demonstrate how the natural world of birds might incorporate items cast off from humans into their efforts to build themselves places to live…

Blasted @ Bang and the Clatter 1/30 Bang & Clatter, Cleveland’s Public Square Theatre, is noted for going outside the box in choosing their scripts. More often than not, their bold choices pay off by producing plays that other venues wouldn’t produce, and challenging audiences to think. Their latest choice, Blasted, Sarah Kane’s antiwar/anti-life play is a case in point. Blasted was the first of the British author’s five plays. The initial performance was fiercely attacked by most newspaper critics, many of whom regarded it as a rather immature attempt to shock the audience…

Dido & Aeneas @ Josephat Arts Hall 1/30 Not quite all the weather-related events of last week were out-of-doors. Apollo’s Fire, led by its founding music director Jeannette Sorrell created thunder and wind and rain and all sorts of imaginary special effects within the warm confines of Josephat Arts Hall. The occasion was the first staged opera presented in this welcoming space — Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, partly in celebration of the 350th anniversary of the composer’s birth…
