You probably think of a museum as a large, imposing building filled with art or artifacts.
The Mt. Pleasant Heritage House Cultural Arts & Resource Center, which calls itself a “virtual museum,” has the arts and artifacts but not the building.
Founded by three (literal) sisters, Yolanda Burt, Yvonne Malcolm and Cheryl Pailin, they established their nonprofit to share their collection of artifacts with the community for educational purposes. Their traveling museum features a “discovery box” of items they’ve acquired from Africa, Central America, South, and North America, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.
“Our goal is to take our discovery box of cultural artifacts to all communities and to people of all colors, especially during Black History Month, so we can provide an opportunity for cultural learning and global awareness, thus a cultural traveling museum,” say executive director Yvonne Malcolm.
Normally they’re available to take their artifacts to schools, libraries and other organizations in the community. Currently, Mt. Pleasant Heritage House Cultural Arts will book virtual tours on a sliding pay scale. To find out more go to www.mtpleasantheritagehouse.org or contact info@mtpleasantheritagehouse.org.
