High

As in “You must be…” if you don’t think this region is ready to explode. Why? Because the cool people — the ones we follow, anyway — keep moving in the right direction: Adoption Network is hosting Lanes for Change to help adoptees and birthparents; Get Hep Swing is bringing their C-town crew to DC for a jitterbug national tourney; a biking workshop lands at CMNH. You can even feel high using your iPhone with our new mobile app. Highly recommended. –Thomas Mulready

High Aspirations? High Heels!
March your way into Corporate America. Just wear the right shoes.

For businesswomen, beyond the suit, the right pair of heels serves as the simultaneous protective shield and lethal spear that warriors wore in Medieval times.

The right heels not only give us the confidence to walk with our head held a little taller but, also, to be able to look men — those making more than us — directly in the eye, as if to say, “We are not your daughters, we are your equals…” Read more from Alex Sukhoy here

Come Bowl, Party & Change Lives

Betsie Norris has a special connection to Adoption Network Cleveland. Many executive directors are passionate about the mission of the non-profits they helm, but Norris was an adoptee herself, and in 1986 she searched for her birthparents. Much to her surprise, she found her birthmother and was welcomed into the family with open arms. She realized that there was a lack of resources for adoptees, birthparents and everyone whose lives had been changed by adoption. In 1988, with a small group of volunteers, Norris founded Adoption Network Cleveland.

Check out this exclusive Cool Cleveland video where Sean Tuttle interviews Betsie Norris, executive director of Adoption Network Cleveland, about their upcoming fundraiser, Lanes for Change 2011 on Sat 8/27.

Can’t attend Lanes for Change? Never fear. Cool Cleveland reporter Julie Cajigas and her husband will be bowling and would love your support on their fundraising page. Let’s see if Cool Cleveland readers can pledge $1,000.00 to Adoption Network Cleveland. Click Here to donate. If every Cool Cleveland reader donated just $1, Adoption Network Cleveland would receive nearly ten times the $1,000.00 goal!

Too Much to DO!!
It’s NOT the End of Summer

There’s a LOT to do in Cleveland. A lot of it free, a lot of it ostentatious, a lot of it outdoors, a lot of it worthwhile.

It’s not the end of summer. Festivals are revving up again, and musical acts are tuning up their guitars and setting up their drums, somewhere… Read Claudia Taller’s festival picks here

Copia – Retail, Thrift, and Dark Stores

Whereas certain Midwest cities, ahem, already have an inauspicious tag of being called the Rust Belt, contemporary photographer Brian Ulrich explores another level of decay or disrepair infecting the same areas — only this time in the suburbs — in his new exhibition on view Sat 8/27 through Mon 1/16Read more from John Benson here

I ran into a friend (at least I hope and pray she’s still a friend) at a restaurant the other day whose body of work I greatly admire, and she was furious at me over something I’d written…

That’s not a question people typically ask. They usually ask “What Kind of Wine Do You Drink?” But have you ever picked up a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon expecting it to be smooth and deep with berries and chocolate and instead you get wine that looks like the wine version of weak tea and tastes as sour as a Jolly Rancher…? Sowell Won Good stuff Mr. Frazier. This community was betrayed by Bill Mason and everyone in this community should never forget that. Bill Mason had the opportunity to not try Sowell and still lock him up forever but he said no…

The legal system is really a crock. Have the fair trial on Monday, the appeal on Tuesday, and the execution on Wednesday. And I don’t care if you’re black, white, or polka dotted…

We simply do not have the moral authority to take another person’s life. Killing a person because they killed someone (or worse) is no way to dissuade this type of crime, nor is it an appropriate response — it is merely hypocrisy. This was Mason’s show… not a win for anyone except him….

The reason we all underestimate the Tea Party is because anyone who pays attention can see that the Tea Part leaders are just not very bright…
