Ohio congressman John Boehner abruptly resigned from Congress in October 2015 after serving nearly five years in its top job as Speaker, making him second in the presidential succession line and one of the most powerful politicians in D.C. — in theory.
In reality, the fractious Republican caucus with its increasingly powerful Tea Party “Freedom” caucus (who now look positively benign compared to newcomers like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert and Madison Cawthorn) was getting harder, if not impossible, to manage. Already despised by the left (he was behind Ohio’s last congressional gerrymander), he was now facing fire from the right: he seemed old-school compared to these newbie firebrands. And since he dislikes Trump, this far-right Republican is a RINO (“Republican in Name Only”) to them.
Now Boehner, comfortably in retirement as a cannabis lobbyist (!), is having his say in his new book On the House: A Washington Memoir in which he pulls no punches in expressing his opinions about some of the new brand of Republicans. Much is being made of his scathing view of the widely despised Texas Senator Ted Cruz, but given that Boehner called him “Lucifer in the flesh” five years ago, that’s not a news flash.
Join Boehner to hear more of his candid viewpoints when he’s the guest of the Hudson Library & Historical Society in a live streamed event. The event is free, but you must register here. Copies of the book are available from Hudson’s Learned Owl Book Shop.
