It would be easy to dismiss the idea of collecting art entirely, given the headlines about the obscene prices being paid by billionaire oligarchs for artworks. Seriously — nearly $60 million for a Jeff Koons sculpture I wouldn’t want to devote basement storage space to let alone display in my home?
But you can find art that speaks to you at reasonable prices, made by artists living right here in northeast Ohio? How do you find them? How do you decide what to buy? (Here’s my #1 tip: ask yourself “Do I love it?”)
The Akron Art Museum’s chief curator Ellen Rudolph, Hieronymous gallery owner Rick Rogers and Artnet Auctions’ Jason Rulnick will share their tips in a panel discussion on “The Art of Collecting” in the museum’s auditorium. As Rudolph says, “There are many ways to break into collecting art, especially if you start out with the artists living and working right in your backyard. There is so much talent in Northeast Ohio, and we are fortunate to have many opportunities to connect with artists and galleries in informal, unintimidating ways.”
The event is free and open to the public.
