Procession Through Lake View Cemetery Closes Exhibit at The Sculpture Center

Sat 10/1 @ 4PM

This is the last weekend for the FRONT International Triennial. So if you were hoping to check out any of its far-flung exhibits, get going.

One of those is The Dream Keeper, by New York City-based artist Abigail DeVille, now at The Sculpture Center. As one of the pieces of the work, DeVille engaged with neighbors to create installations in the University Circle/Fairfax area that drew on their input, stories and poems by Langston Hughes whose quote “Oh, gods of dust and rainbows” gave the triennial its theme.

To celebrate the closing, DeVille will lead a procession through Lake View Cemetery, which literally abuts on The Sculpture Center. Such processions are part of her practice, which aims to take art out of the gallery and into the community to engage people where they are. In this procession, she intends to take the focus away from the oft-celebrated wealthy tycoons and influential city leaders buried there but to Black Clevelanders whose life stories may not be as familiar.

The procession will start at 4pm and move on foot to Lake View Cemetery, ending at Wade Chapel. It will be followed by a closing reception at the gallery starting at 5:30pm. Both are free and open to the public.
