Pianist Monika Herzig is on the music faculty at Indiana University, which boasts one of the finest music schools in the country in the unlikely environs of southern Indiana. And from that base, she put together an ensemble of women from around the world to participate in the recording of the album Whole World in Her Hands, released earlier this year. She drew on outstanding musicians and band leaders from Israel, Cuba, Germany, India, Australia, Malaysia and the U.S. to make a statement about the power and eminence of women globally. In fact, all of the musicians on the recording were women.

“My goal and hope is to offer this work as model for young women contemplating a career in music by seeing and hearing what these women from all over the world have managed to accomplish, despite many difficulties,” says Herzig.

From the group that appeared on the recording she’s put together an international touring band featuring herself, guitarist Leni Stern, flutist Jamie Braun, trombonist Reut Regev, bassist Jennifer Vincent and drummer Arianna Fanning. They’ll perform at Nighttown. Tickets are $20.
