ChamberFest Cleveland Launches Its 12th Season

Wed 6/12-Sat 6/29

It was 12 years ago when Cleveland Orchestra principal clarinetist emeritus Franklin Cohen and his violinist daughter Diana Cohen, concertmaster of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, decided to launch a festival of their own — and ChamberFest Cleveland was born. Its mission was to take small-ensemble concerts, performed by world-class musicians, out into the community into diverse and often unconventional venues to make music more accessible.

It’s evolved a little over the years, but the basic format is still the same. It kicks off on Wednesday June 12 with “Sacred +Profane” at the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Mixon Hall. It opens with a 6:30pm welcome from Franklin Cohen and ChamberFest executive director Jessica Peek Sherwood, followed by ten musicians, including Diana Cohen and her husband, pianist Roman Rabinovich, performing pieces by Mozart, Claude Debussy and Felix Mendelssohn. There’ll also be a “postlude toast” to celebrate the festival’s launch.

The festival continues through Saturday June 29 with eleven other concerts, along with talks and a film, taking place at venues ranging from CIM and the Maltz Performing Arts Center, to the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes and CLE Urban Winery, the Federated Church in Chagrin Falls, Disciples Christian Church in Cleveland Heights and Harkness Chapel on the Case Western Reserve campus.
