It’s appropriate that the show this weekend at the Lorain Palace Theatre featuring some of the starts of the local reggae scene is called “Reggae Meltown.” That was the name of the 1987 debut album by Cleveland’s First Light who reigned as one of its most popular bands for 14 years — and the album ranked as one of the best-selling albums self-released by a local band.
This show features the still wildly popular Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. band, the band Jones, one of First Light’s front men, dedicated himself to when First Light broke up in 1998. And where are First Light’s other musicians today? Most of them comprise a band called Shake (pronounced Shaky) Ground, a spinoff of their longtime ensemble Outlaws I & I which they renamed when their lead vocalist Butchie B retired. In fact, they’ve added trumpet player Joe Miller —who used to play with First Light. So this evening should be one big, joyful reunion. The reggae good vibes will be off the charts.
