A firefly is a firefly, right? And as enchanting as it can be to sit outdoors at dusk on a summer evening and watch them flicker all around you, they’re all pretty much the same, aren’t they?
Actually, that isn’t the case. In northeast Ohio, you’ll find as many as eight different species of fireflies, or “lightning bugs,” with different colored lights, flash patterns and distances from the ground.
Naturalists Tami Gingrich and Linda Gilbert will be letting you in on how you can identify the various types at the Firefly Frolic at Geauga Park District’s Swine Creek Reservation. There’ll be a short indoor presentation at the lodge, providing some background on these insects, followed by a walk around the grounds to take a look at the different types in their habitat.
It’s free and no registration is required. Call 440-286-9516 for more information.
