During the day, Cleveland’s artists are hard at work staking out the avant-garde and breaking the paradigms of contemporary art. At night, it’s a different story.
Join the fray as C-town’s artistic royalty throw down on the dancefloor on Sat 11/05/11 to honor King Howard Freedman and Queen Rita Montlack, twisted pillars of the community who’ve inspired generations of local superheroes to boldly create new work (and donate some of it for the auction), dress as their favorite pop royalty and mingle with the superstars of the art scene.
Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, as they overtook last year’s record and raised a king’s ransom for SPACES gallery. Party of the year? Only if you were there. Watch the video here.

The 1980s at 45 Revolutions Per Minute by Matthew Chojnacki
For most listeners younger than 30, their recent discovery of turntables and vintage records holds an irresistible retro hip, much in the same way spinning Dad and Mom’s Sinatra 78s felt to baby boomers in the ’70s.
So, it’s natural to witness a corresponding explosion of interest in the history of vinyl records and — in the case of Cleveland-based pop culture historian Matthew Chojnacki’s new book — their art. Check out this cool book, just in time for Black Friday at your local vinyl record store… Read more from Armen Marc Benneian here

You’ve heard of Flash Mobs, which started out as events organized via social media where people showed up in a public space (or sometimes private, like a shopping mall) to sing, dance and celebrate… and then put their joyous spontaneity up on YouTube for the world to enjoy.
Then, a bunch of punk kids took over the idea and decided to turn them into mindlessly destructive riots and looting…

MANSFIELD: Manufactured Controversy Right on on both points, Mansfield. Good for you for continuing to hold up a microscope to the PD (and shame on Scene for doing almost no media criticism anymore). And please note, the PD DOES NOT have an ombudsman…

Your disclosure is honorable here, but it points to the fact that you’ve got a personal stake in this issue. I didn’t work on this story, but I know — as do you — that open access has been at the core of Plain Dealer coverage of government in recent months and the pre-council secretive meetings held by this council in its formative days justifies heightened scrutiny…
