We’re psyched for the opportunity to see The Polyphonic Spree (all 20 of them!) at the new Music Box Supper Club, which opens this week with shows by honey honey, Cracker, Bruce Cockburn, and Mavis Staples. We interviewed TPS’s leader Tim DeLaughter on the phone, and you can listen below.

Appearing at the new Music Box Supper Club on Sat 8/23, Polyphonic Spree will bring about 20 musicians, from french horn to strings to a full rock band.
Polyphonic Spree delighted David Bowie enough for him to curate them into the Meltdown Festival and have them open for him on tour. Listen to DeLaughter talk about working with Bowie and putting his music on movies and TV soundtracks like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and United States of Tara. “Hopefully we get some perks when people decide to use our music. That’s basically how we’ve been able to survive. At the end of the day, we get paid for a 4-piece band. But we have four bands in our band!” You’ll have to come to their performance to see if they will be wearing their ubiquitous choral robes. Or something totally different.

There’s turnaround happening at Collinwood High school with the application of their New Tech curriculum. Collinwood High school is among 14 schools in Ohio adapting to the program with three others in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The new curriculum focuses on integrating technology into the education process.
“It’s really exciting because it’s all project-based learning and all grounded in real-world applications, said Principal Maria Carlson. So often, students will say, ‘Why am I even learning this? I’ll never use it.’ That’s not ever going to be true anymore because they’ll be applying it in real time.

For ten years, Devo fans from around the country gathered in NE Ohio to pay tribute to the Akron band that made such a splash in the late 70s & early 80s. That event, the DEVOtional, took a three-year hiatus, but now it’s back with two big days of bands, films, vendors, speakers, and a Q&A with band member Jerry Casale. Fri 8/15-Sat 8/16.
