Chicago-based photographer LaToya Ruby Frazier is known for using her work to document the downside of today’s urban America facing issues of poverty, injustice and environmental degradation, and to call for social justice. She’s an associate professor of photographer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Two of her photos are part of the Akron Art Museum’s current Family exhibit.

She’s also the 2017 recipient of the Akron Art Museum’s Knight Purchase Prize, established in 1990, which each year buys a body of work from the selected photographer. So she’ll be coming to the museum to present the Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell Lecture at the Akron Art Museum, an annual guest lectureship on photographic-related media that includes spending time with students at the University of Akron’s Myers School of Art. It’s free and open to the public.
