Women in Science Share Possibilities at Natural History Museum

UPDATE: This event has ben postponed. The museum is still open for visitors.

Sat 3/14 @ 10AM

Scientific fields are more open to women than in the past, although there’s still a long way to go. The president/CEO of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Sonia Winner, is a woman, as is one of its top curators and many of its staff scientists.

Some of them will be on hand for its Women in Science Day, with a series of special happenings at the museum, most of them free with regular admission. From 10-11am, CMNH registrar Amber Anderson will talk about “When Science Meets Art: Innovation and Exploration,” using artworks in the museum’s fine arts collection to illustrate how science has impacted the content and technique of art.

There’ll be an opportunity to meet more of the museum’s scientifically minded women, along with women who work at NASA and Case Western Reserve University, from 11:45am-12:45pm, during “Coffee, Cookies and Conversation.” Bring your daughter to ask questions about how they got to where they are.

Then from 1-2:15pm, meteorologist Betsy Kling (not a scientist) will lead a Q&A with women scientists as they share how their interest in science developed and the work they do now. In addition, at 11:15 and 2:30, there’s a planetarium show led by a female astronomer. An additional ticket is required for that.
