Rocky River Chamber Music Society Opens Season with Young Oberlin String Quartet

Mon 9/25 @ 7:30PM

The Rocky River Chamber Music Society is one of the area’s longest running small classic music presenting organizations: it begins its 65th season this year. That season kicks off this week with a performance by the Oberlin Conservatory-based Poiesis Quartet, joined by mezzo-soprano Nancy Maultsby.

Among string quartets, which tend to have long histories, Poiesis is a newborn baby. It was founded just last year during the Conservatory’s Advanced Quartet Seminar program.

Composed of comprised of violinists Sarah Ma and Max Ball, violist Jasper de Boor and cellist Drew Dansby, it’s already making its mark: it was the grand prize winner of the 2023 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and received Fischoff’s Senior Strings Gold Medal and the Lift Every Voice prizes. And it’s performed in Uruguay where it had residencies earlier this year.

For its program with the RRCMS, taking place at the West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, it will perform Johannes Brahms’ String Quartet No. 1 in C minor, and the Cleveland premier of Songs of Correspondence by Richard Stout, who plays trombone in the Cleveland Orchestra and teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

The concert is free (donations are welcome!) and you can also listen at home of RRCMS’s YouTube page which will go live at 7:15pm on the evening of the concert. Get more information here.
