Twenty-three years after forming as a side project by some of the area’s top metal musicians, that horde of masked musicians known as Mushroomhead keeps plowing along. The band that wasn’t supposed to be “serious” is now working on its ninth album, the follow-up to 2014’s The Righteous and the Butterfly, and, having just completed a midwest swing, is preparing to head for Europe again in January. But before they go they’ll be treating their local fans to a special show.
The group’s intense but nuanced sound, which blends metal, punk, industrial, goth and electronics packaged in a stage show that features elaborate and every evolving costumes and stage sets, has won them a devoted following in their hometown. So their Mushroomhead freakfest in the Agora Ballroom, the smaller of the venue’s two rooms, is likely to be packed. Tickets are $27 in advance, $33 at the door.
