Design

If our work with Apple on our new mobile app has taught us anything, it is that design is integral to 21st century business, communication and life. Good design helps us navigate our devices, our connections and our communities. We’ve learned the lesson and created Cool Neighborhoods in our new app, and in the process, we’ve redesigned Cool Cleveland from the bottom up. Not just our look: our entire business.

We’re not the only ones obsessed with design. Cool Cleveland photographer Elisa Vietri, whose photos you see at the top of each issue, continues with her series focusing on The Makers in our midst: this week the focus is on Dru Christine Fabrics & Design. Terrence Spivy cross-collaborates on a partnership between Karamu & KSU, as he designs connections across the region.

Alex Sukhoy looks back on how she managed to design a life that reconciles creativity and business. Studio 2091 in Cuyahoga Falls hosts 2 shows by Andy Dreamingwolf, both saying goodbye to things and moments past as we design our future.

I’m hosting a Vinyl Listening Party at BW today on the musical history of David Bowie, featuring needle drops on vinyl from his outrageous career. Come by and win a new Cool Cleveland t-shirt. Roldo remembers when an editor made history around the world and in newsrooms across town. Mansfield killed at the recent PechaKucha and doesn’t let up with his diatribe against Chief Wahoo. Anastasia Pantsios picks some red hot sounds this week, including the Akron Porch Rockr, the Cleveland Blues Challenge, and Cle-raised jazz singer Liz Sharp’s return. Alex remembers James Gandolfini, and our Cool Cleveland Editorial Team endorses in the upcoming election while urging you to vote. That’s how you design your own future. –Thomas Mulready

At a time when big business is getting such a bad rep and when there’s a completely unnecessary national divide — bankers vs. artists, religious vs. atheists, urbanites vs. bucolics, marrieds vs. singles, Boomers vs. Millennials, vegetarians vs. meatatarians, bicyclists vs. SUVers — it’s good to know that some pursuits can help you reconcile life, regardless of desired achievements…

Clevelander Dolores Kopacz started collecting beach glass on vacation.

Now she ships her jewelry around the world made from glass she finds on the beaches around Cleveland. A tiny tag tells buyers the glass is from Lake Erie.

And her buyers more and more want to use a credit card. So Glassware by DAK partnered with Cleveland-based Electronic Merchant Systems to use their new EMS+ credit card reader. Listen as Dolores talks about she loves the convenience, the portability and the ability to harvest her customers email addresses, all while swiping their credit card onsite at the Rocky River Arts Fest.

This Friday, Studio 2091 in Cuyahoga Falls will host two shows by talented local artist Andy Dreamingwolf — a solo exhibition & a group show.

“The paintings for this show are representational goodbyes to both things and moments past,” says Dreamingwolf. “It acknowledges movement and change. It’s a love letter professing affection for our time together as well as condemnation of that which separated our paths…”

Believe me, I’m not trying to throw salt into an open wound — but then again maybe I am since all previous efforts at playing nice on this subject have failed — but isn’t it past time that management of Cleveland’s major league baseball team bites the bullet and finally does what it takes to bring our town a winner: Get rid of Chief Wahoo….

Bob Manry Crossed the Ocean Alone
And Embarrassed His PD Bosses

It was 50 years ago August. One of the biggest local stories the Plain Dealer missed. It was especially galling to the paper’s reporters, as the hero was a shy PD copy editor.

I was a short-timer at the PD and saw the shame among colleagues. It said a lot about the paper’s leadership. None of it good…
