Independent Record Store Day isn’t quite the big deal it once was, with charges that bigger stores are favored with the most desirable special RSD releases and some of those releases even appearing on eBay at inflated prices prior to RSD.
Nevertheless, we suggest you visit your local indie record store, on any day you choose! My Mind’s Eye in Lakewood and Akron’s Square Records are both continuing to participate. Loop Records in Tremont, A Separate Reality in Ohio City and Hausfrau Records in Gordon Square would all appreciate serious music lovers stopping in any time.
Over on Waterloo, Blue Arrow Records has opted out of being a Record Store Day store for several years. But they will have the family of Cleveland music legend Brian Sands/Kinchy, who passed away last year, as special guest vendors in the store, selling off records and music-related collectibles he amassed over his years as a musician and music lover, and founder of the first David Bowie fan club in the U.S. They’ll be open from 11am-7pm.
And even though they’re not a record store, walk up the street to the Beachland Tavern, which will be celebrating with a special free matinee concert sponsored by Dogfish Head. It will feature Grateful Dead tribute band Sunshine Daydream and a special Grateful Dead-themed in place of the Beachland’s regular Saturday brunch. There will be prizes and raffles as well. Doors open at 11am; music starts at 1pm.
