Experimental Jazz Legend Ken Vandermark Brings Ensemble to BOP STOP

Tue 2/27 @ 8PM

Saxophonist/clarinetist/composer Ken Vandermark has been a mainstay of Chicago’s experimental jazz scene for 35 years, having led or been part of countless configurations of groundbreaking musicians. He also runs an independent record label, co-founded Catalytic Sound to help support the economic viability of improvising musicians, and co-curates interview and music series Option. To call him a bulwark of the improvising scene is to understate his importance.

His quartet Vandermark’s Edition Redux explores a vast range of musical styles, including experimental jazz, dub, funk, post-punk, tropicalia and several different strands of improvised music. He’s joined by three other like-minded players: pianist/composer/educator Erez Dessel who “is currently developing ways to paint with the piano using charcoal, pastel, paper, and linen;” drummer/composer Lily Finnegan; and “classically trained tuba player gone awry” Beth McDonald, who plays her instrument both acoustically and with electronic effects pedals.

This concert is presented with New Ghosts, local concert presenters who specialize in presenting avant-garde improvised music. Tickets to attend in person are $20 each. It will alos be livestreamed on the BOP STOP facebook page.
