Northeast Ohio has a lot of history relating to the anti-slavery movement and the Underground Railroad — why it inspired an entire festival, Station Hope, which normally takes place in May at the Historic St John’s Church in Ohio City.
But before slaves escaping to freedom could reach Ohio City, the railroad ran through Bedford to the south another hotbed of anti-slavery views. That’s why the Bedford Downtown Alliance and Crossroads Universal Inc. partnered with street art nonprofit Graffiti HeArt to create the first large-scale mural in Bedford. The 40-foot mural, created by artists Stina Aleah, Davon Brantley and Christa Childs, is located along railroad tracks where President Abraham Lincoln passed on his way to his 1861 inauguration and where his funeral procession passed in 1865.
The mural will be officially unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, September 12 at 90 Willis Street in Bedford. Bedford Downtown Alliance board members and building owner Matthew Stewart will join the artists to who will be available to talk and answer questions. Masks and social distancing are required.
