Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground and The Exploding Plastic Inevitable

Our new show When Andy Met Lou investigates the intersection of two of the most iconic artists of the 20th century, Andy Warhol and Lou Reed, and the innovative live show they created with the Velvet Underground called The Exploding Plastic Inevitable.

By 1964, Warhol abandoned painting for film and in 1965 felt the next logical step was to expand into multi-media spectacle. Underground filmmaker Barbara Rubin saw Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker at their second-ever live gig at the Cafe Bizarre and told Warhol, who signed them immediately and adopted the band into his world of Factory Superstars like Edie Sedgwick, Nico, Gerard Malanga, Billy Name, Bibbe Hansen (singer Beck’s mother), plus various and sundry adult film performers, drag queens, socialites, drug addicts, musicians, and free-thinkers, including Holly Woodlawn, Jackie Curtis, Candy Darling and others name checked a few years later in Reed’s epic hit, Walk On The Wild Side.

You’ll see a side of these characters you never knew existed, and discover how Warhol incubated the avant-garde, “produced” The Velvet Underground’s first album, and conceptualized their live show, with multiple projections, films, strobe lights and special effects, which defined live performance for decades to come.

Thomas Mulready creates a multi-media presentation featuring rare video, needle drops, and recently unearthed photos, followed by a sizzling live music performance by Cleveland’s own Vanity Crash. The show will be presented at two venues: BOP STOP in Cleveland on Fri 9/13 and Sat 9/14, then debuting at Jilly’s Music Room in Akron for a Velvet Brunch at noon on Sun 9/22. Superstars, icons and the curious are welcome.

The Cleveland Urban Film Festival, now in its 8th year, aims to showcase positive minority images and provide opportunities for diverse filmmakers to show their work and have it discussed. It hosts multiple screenings, as well as workshops, panel discussions and symposiums. It now attracts thousands of attendees.

“After attending years ago the Cleveland International Film Festival, which is huge and amazing, I just wanted to see more films for people of color,” says the festival’s executive director Donna Dabbs. A highlight is the return of Warrensville H.S. grad Yvette Nicole Brown (pictured) and the exclusive preview screening of her new film Always a Bridesmaid, whose producer also attended WHHS. Thu 9/12-Fri 9/20.

Photographer Matthew Chasney is a Clevelander, but hadn’t done much work focused on Cleveland until The Hope Memorial, the name of both his new book and his show on view at the Loop in Tremont Fri 9/13. “I wanted to do a very simple project about the place I’m most familiar with, and I thought it would be interesting to think of Cleveland as if the Cuyahoga Valley didn’t exist,” he say, referring to the traditional east/west dichotomy.

Instead, he’s thinking of crossings, and of erasing visual clues as to the exact locations of his images. “These photographs happened to be made in northeast Ohio, but they are really just visual representations of some of the themes of the region instead of being abut the region.”

“Sometimes decisions made by public officials don’t pass the smell test,” says columnist C. Ellen Connally. “When members of the public look at a situation and walk away shaking their heads saying, ‘Something just isn’t right,’ usually something isn’t right.”

Connally is questioning the decision made by Cleveland assistant prosecutor Arik Kinast not to file charges against Mayor Jackson’s grandson for assaulting a young woman. (He has now been indicted by the county). While we don’t know why Kinast made the decision he did or whether he was pressured, Connally says he should have turned the decision over to the county or a special prosecutor to begin with, since the mayor is ultimately his boss.
